The Middle School
Exploring Everything in Between (Grades 5-8)
Middle School is a time of growth both as individuals and together as a community. Self-discovery and self-advocacy are nurtured along with a sense of community that is built on honor, respect, and belonging. This nurtured sense of community provides a foundation upon which students can grow in confidence by learning from opportunities and challenges.
CURRICULUM
Our thoughtfully designed curriculum builds upon foundational skills, while pushing students to become critical thinkers and compassionate problem solvers. One distinguishing factor of our program is the single gender structure. This allows students to confidently navigate adolesence as they tackle new academic challenges and continue to build on foundations laid in the Lower School. The curriculum itself allows for advancement, choices, and participation in grade-wide initiatives like Envision Richmond, the 8th Grade Capstone program.
| Advisory |
|---|
|
The Middle School Advisory Program reflects the heart of the Middle School through its focus on building relationships among students and between adults and students. Students are assigned to an Advisory Group that meets daily. Advisors know their advisees on a personal basis and coordinate information about student progress. On a weekly basis, students focus on learning strategies — particularly organization, time management, and communicating with teachers. Other topics for discussion promote the health and wellness of our students, including using social media appropriately, making healthy choices about alcohol and other drugs, and maintaining a positive body image. The advisors work closely with the Middle School counselor and Academic Services to meet the developmental needs of all Middle School students. |
| Activities |
|
The Middle School years are a time of exploration for 5th through 8th Graders. With this in mind, hallmark programs like band, strings ensemble, chorus, and dance are offered along with a variety of other activities which include robotics, journalism, speech and debate, chess, outdoor clubs, Makerspace, and service and leadership clubs. Middle School teachers embrace this opportunity to engage with our students on a level that is different from our core academic programs. The Middle School schedule allows multiple activity periods each week. |
