Sports Medicine

The Sports Medicine Program exists as part of a comprehensive health and safety program for our students. We are committed to providing evidence-based quality healthcare for our students through education, injury prevention, emergency care, injury evaluation, treatment, rehabilitation, and return to sport assessments.

Our athletic trainers are board certified and licensed health care providers in the Commonwealth of Virginia. We work closely with our school nurses, strength coaches, local doctors, and physical therapists to help manage a wide range of injuries. Our athletic trainers are available at all home games and practices for our Middle School, JV, and Varsity teams. We provide baseline concussion testing starting in 7th Grade and help manage concussions for our 7th-12th Graders.

What do our athletic trainers do?

  • Review and approve pre-participation physical forms for 7th-12th Graders.
  • Manage extreme heat and extreme weather activity modifications and safety.
  • Prepare, practice, and update Emergency Action Plans for each athletics venue.
  • Care for 79 teams and over 700 student-athletes on two campuses with two fully stocked athletic training rooms.
  • Help the school nurses with school day emergencies and musculoskeletal injuries.
  • Work with student-athletes during school day free periods on an appointment structure basis for injury treatment and rehabilitation.
  • Help with Cougar Sports Zone injuries.
  • Help with Summer Quest and Summer sports performance injuries.
  • Teach CPR/first aid/AED to faculty and staff.
  • Sponsor and teach and students in the Future Medical Professionals Club.

Our role as athletic trainers is different from any other healthcare professional in that we care for student-athletes prior to injury all the way through full return to sport. It is important to us that our student-athletes return to sport from an injury with a better understanding of prevention and how to care for themselves through lifelong physical activity.
