At Collegiate, learning extends far beyond academics. Extracurricular involvement is an essential part of a student’s journey. From the earliest years through graduation, our clubs and activities are designed to build curiosity, confidence, leadership, and a strong commitment to service. Each stage of a student’s experience is carefully structured to foster meaningful engagement, personal growth, and a sense of responsibility to both the school and the greater community.

The progression of clubs and activities at Collegiate is designed with purpose — guiding students through a journey of exploration, responsibility, and leadership. As they move from Lower to Middle to Upper School, students build the skills and mindset necessary to lead, serve, and contribute in meaningful ways.

UPPER SCHOOL

LEADERSHIP, MASTERY AND SERVICE

By the time students reach Upper School, they are prepared to take ownership of their extracurricular experiences, whether through leading clubs, founding new organizations, or deepening their commitment to service projects. Collegiate provides opportunities for students to refine their leadership skills, explore career and academic interests, and prepare for life beyond high school.

KEY FOCUS AREAS:

Student-Led Leadership – Students take charge in organizations such as Student Cooperative Association, Honor Council, and Athletics Council.
Advanced Service Engagement – Required service hours and student-led service clubs allow students to make a lasting difference.
Professional and Academic Development – Clubs like Darr-Davis Investment Advisory Board, Model UN, and STEM/Robotics connect students with real-world applications of their learning.
Creative and Performing Arts Growth – Glee Club, Thespians, and The Match (student newspaper) allow students to refine their artistic and communication skills.

As students mentor younger students, lead service initiatives, and organize major school events, they develop essential skills in organization, advocacy, collaboration, and ethical decision-making — qualities that will serve them well in college and beyond.

MIDDLE SCHOOL

EXPANDING INTERESTS AND TAKING INITIATIVE

As students enter Middle School, they begin to take on greater responsibility in their extracurricular pursuits. Clubs and activities become more specialized, giving students the opportunity to dive deeper into their interests while learning the fundamentals of leadership and civic engagement.

KEY FOCUS AREAS:

Leadership Development – Middle School Council representatives begin shaping student-led initiatives.
Community Engagement – Service clubs and projects emphasize making an impact beyond the classroom.
Collaboration and Teamwork – Clubs like Lego Robotics, Model Rocketry, and Debate Club encourage students to solve problems together.
Personalized Exploration – Students select from a wide variety of STEM, fine arts, and special interest clubs to explore their talents and passions.

Through experiences like Envision Richmond, where 8th Graders engage in hands-on city-based projects, and the Stone Soup Project, where students prepare meals for those in need, Middle School students begin to understand their role in a broader community while developing critical thinking and leadership skills.

LOWER SCHOOL

BUILDING FOUNDATIONS THROUGH EXPLORATION

In the Lower School, clubs and activities introduce students to a variety of interests and experiences, encouraging them to explore, collaborate, and develop confidence in a supportive environment. At this stage, students begin to develop important skills such as teamwork, problem-solving, and creative expression.

Curiosity and Creativity – Early exposure to STEM, music, theater, and the arts.
Teamwork and Social Skills – Learning how to collaborate through academic and enrichment clubs.
Leadership Beginnings – Programs like Cougar Pals encourage students to mentor and welcome new peers.
Service Awareness – Participating in school-wide initiatives and hands-on service projects.

Through activities like Early Morning Math, Library Club, Gardening Club, and Cougar Theater, students develop a love of learning and a spirit of collaboration that prepare them for deeper involvement in the Middle School years.
